Be the first to offer your condolences on Carrie's Tribute Wall
CARRIE ELIZABETH VEAL-POWELL was born on July 8, 1933, to the union of Robert Veal and Pearl Elizabeth Veal. She was affectionately known as "Sista." Her memorable sayings, sense of humor, and infectious laughter brought light to any space she occupied.
Carrie accepted Jesus Christ as Lord at a young age and represented Him throughout her life in both word and deed. As part of her desire to serve, she, along with her siblings, sang in a gospel group known widely as the Spiritual Travelers. Additionally, for decades, she served as a faithful member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a choir member.
On September 10, 1948, Carrie married the love of her life Arthur Powell, Jr., to whom she was devoted for over 41 years, and to this union, six children were born. Carrie spent her initial years at Amite County Training School in Gloster, MS. An accomplished seamstress, Carrie would hold positions in the garment industry and would later retire as a newspaper courier for The Enterprise Journal.
Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Veal and Pearl Elizabeth Veal; her husband Rev. Arthur Powell Jr.; one daughter, Jacqueline Smith; three sons, Charles Powell, Ronnie Powell and James Arnold Powell; three sisters, Celeste Gayden, Estella Mae Weathersby, Katie Ruth Taplin.
Carrie transitioned her life Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Liberty Community Living Center, Liberty MS.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her two sons, Robert Lowell Powell, Gloster, MS; Tyron (Carmen) Powell, Enterprise, AL; two sisters, Johnella "Myrtis" Williams and Sadie Pearl Veal; one brother, Robert Veal Sr; two daughter-in-laws, Patiki Powell and Glenda Powell; one son-in-law, Bernell Smith; eleven (11) grandchildren, eighteen (18) great-grandchildren, five(5) great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
